Re-homing a rescue dog can be an extremely rewarding experience. There are many thousands of perfectly healthy dogs that are in need of a home in the UK, so consider this option if you are planning on bringing a new dog into your family.

It is essential that you find your rescue dog through a reputable rescue organisation, and get as much information about the dog's background, behaviour and requirements as possible. Listen to the people at the rescue organisation. They have a wealth of knowledge, and a lot of experience in matching people with the best dog for their home and lifestyle.

Before you bring your new friend home, be sure to have everything ready for them. You will need a good quality collar, a tag with all your details, a strong lead, a comfy bed, food and water bowls, toys and chews. You might like to consider a crate to give your dog somewhere safe to escape to.

Agree as a family what rules / commands you will have for your dog, and make sure that everyone is consistent with them. For example, is the dog allowed upstairs? On the furniture? Where should they sleep at night? Who is responsible for walks? Feeding?

When you collect your new dog, it is essential that you are patient with them. You cannot be sure how many homes they have had, before being rehomed into your family home, so give them time to settle in to their new surroundings. Make sure that everything stays calm and relaxed, and give them time to explore. Start with a walk outside on the lead, then show them their food and water bowls, and their bed.

Many dogs lose their confidence through the re-homing process, so bringing them to training to help them regain this, will help to ease their insecurities. It is also really important that you bond with your dog as soon as possible, and training classes are a great way to do this in a controlled and safe environment.

The trainers at MDTC have been owners to many rescue dogs, so are always on hand to help with advice.

And remember you really can teach an old dog new tricks!
